Word of Inspiration or uplift to begin our meeting

Lenora Williams-Omenka provided a word of Inspiration

Lenora Williams-Omenka provided words of wisdom from her heart. She reminded all of us to count our blessings and remember why we are in Rotary, which is to provide service to others and to give back where and when we can and that there is no guarantee for our longevity on this earth. She asked for a moment of silence for COVID victims and her daughter that was recently hospitalized with COVID.

Speaker

Our current President, Lenora Williams-Omenka

She reviewed our July 2021 Calendar of Guest Speakers.

  • There was a PowerPoint presentation on Youth Membership and our updated Social Media presence

  • She also discussed possible recruitment for ROTARACT members from age 18 - 40 who have requested membership to our club and the need for a possible revised membership plan to work with possible Rotaract members who possibly have money, time and young family commitments but who have shared community projects and global projects that they would like to work with our club on. There was a healthy discussion among members and our Rotarian guests on possible ways to value them while holding to historical Rotary values and traditions. Our guest shared that his club and many Rotary clubs are struggling with millennial youth membership.

  • Interact Youth recruitment & Inclusion was welcomed and valued. There was also a discussion around a plan of inclusion for our Interact group members.

  • One of our prospective members shared a possible grant with the Gates Foundation that will help support our international Kenya project for assisting and supporting young girls to stay in school.

Updates and Fellowship

A Day in History

Club Members

Mark Delventhal

The members welcomed our Newark Rotary club visitor by individually introducing themselves to John.

A club tradition of looking back in time at all the interesting events that occurred in time on this day.

  • J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, which centered on the sensitive, rebellious adolescent Holden Caulfield, was published and later became a classic.

  • Apollo 11 lifted off from NASA's John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and four days later two of its astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, became the first humans to set foot on the Moon.

  • American publisher and lawyer John F. Kennedy, Jr., the only son of U.S. President John F. Kennedy and first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, died after the airplane he was piloting crashed off Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts; also killed were his wife and her sister.

  • The world's first parking meters were installed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; the device, which sought to ease congestion, was designed by Carl C. Magee.
